The Black Carpenter Ant (Camponotus pennsylvanicus) is a large, jet black ant species native to eastern North America, commonly found throughout the United States and parts of southern Canada, where it nests in wooded areas. This species gets its name from its smooth, entirely black coloration and its notable size, as workers are among the largest ants in its range. They are primarily nocturnal foragers, being most active during the night when temperatures are cooler, and they are known to travel up to 100 yards in search of food, which mainly consists of sugary substances like honeydew from aphids as well as proteins from insects.
